The unknown woods of the Gran Sasso
... for those who love discovery.
Description
We are on the southern slope of the Gran Sasso in an area known for being barren and without woods. These three days of excursions will make you discover the opposite. We will wander accross areas of the Park unknown to the most, where the paths merge into the pristine vegetation. The woods that we will discover, once crossed by woodsmen, charcoal burners and merchants, today have become silent and populated only by wildlife.
The uphill gap are minimal and thought to immerse themselves completely in nature. For those who have a good spirit of adventure and love for discovery. For the return we will have a minibus that will catch us and take us back to the base.
The proposed routes are all crossings and provide for arrival on a different side than the departure. All returns will be made by private minibus organized by us. For those wishing to make all three trips, it is advisable to stay overnight in the Castel del Monte - Calascio - Santo Stefano di Sessanio area in one of the many B&Bs of the territory.
You can also participate in the single excursion.

Program

  • 1st Day - Castel del Monte – Pass of Capo di Serre – Capo di Serre Mount – Le Riparate – Villa Santa Lucia.
Meeting point: at 8:30 a.m. Castel del Monte after agreement with the guide.
Starting shortly above Castel del Monte, the beautiful route passes in altitude between beech woods and panoramic ridges. Left the path, and after a small peak you descend along a nice trail: an ancient way of communication between the two sides of the mountain, in the direction of Villa S. Lucia, a little known and genuine village that overlooks the Tirino valley.

    Ascent gap: 200 m. - Descent gap: 800 m.
    Length: 9 km. - Walking hours: 5 h. - Difficulty: E.

  • 2nd Day - Castel del Monte – Farindola
The centuries-old beech woods of this southern part of the Gran Sasso are almost intact and inhabited by roe deer and wolves. The route is largely in the forest off the path and therefore absolutely intact and devoid of human presence. Then you enter the Vallone d 'Angora better known but little frequented because it descends on the Adriatic side of the Gran Sasso and, without logistical support, it would be strenuous to go back.
The Vallone d 'Angora or Valle d'Angri is simply spectacular. Surmounted by high rock walls where the eagles nest, it is very rich in different vegetation that changes gradually as it goes down.

    Ascent gap: 150 m. - Descent gap: 750 m.
    Length: 10 km. - Walking hours: 5 h. - Difficulty: E.

  • 3rd Day
CAUTION !! CHANGE TO THE EVENT Given the heavy snowfall of the last few days it is impossible to make the entire crossing. The excursion is scheduled in the same area but with a loop ride in the woods of Mt S. Vito where we will use the SNOWSHOES (if you do not have them we will give them with sticks).

Same meeting point and hour but COST REDUCED TO € 15.

    Ascent gap: 400 m. - Descent gap: 400 m.
Length: 5 km. - Walking hours: 4h30'. - Difficulty: EE.

Expected return: 17:00 Castel del Monte
